personal growth, hobbies, callaway

A new year, a new hobby

Along with my New Year’s Resolutions, I’ve been thinking about getting a hobby.  I am hoping that this will be a year of personal growth and expanding horizons for me.  So as I started to think about an activity to make my hobby, I had discussions with friends and family.  Here is a sampling of their suggestions; knitting, baking, painting, and square dancing (not helpful, by the way).  As discussions made their way around my office, I was offered the following opportunities; target practice at the gun range, bow and arrow shooting, and samurai sword training (which falls nicely into my Zombie Attack plan found here).  I’ve got to say that I like all of these suggestions as well as the group of MindCometeers who will be participating with me.

After much deliberation and input, I’ve decided that what started out as looking for a single new hobby has turned into a whole series of new activities; target practice at the gun range, bow and arrow shooting, sword wielding, and golf (I received a very generous gift and am now the proud owner of a sweet set of Callaway’s.).  I am looking forward to these new experiences and it should be fun!  What kind of hobby are you thinking of picking up in 2011?

patience, change, personal growth

New Year Resolution Update

This is such a “follower” thing to do in January, but I did it this year.  I also think it’s important to periodically review the resolution to see where adjustments need to be made.  Here is mine;

My resolution this year is simply to be a better person.  I am going to try to be more patient, understanding, calm, empowering, and nicer.  Both to myself and those around me.  For those of you who know me, you know I have a very developed sense of equity and fairness.  Counter intuitively, this skill is not helpful in being a better person.  So, alas, I am going to attempt to take a step away from “fairness” and a step toward compassion and love.  My hope is that this will turn into a new way of thinking and being and will not be swept away in a sea of stress, emotional hurts, and reactionary behavior.  May the force be with me…

So far this year, I think I’ve made three (3) people cry - adults, not children.  I’ve yelled, screamed, cried, been irrational, and occasionally acted in a mean-spirited way.  YIKES!  Overall, I’ve been human.  Drat!  I was shooting for something closer to Buddhist Monk.  But this is why I think reviewing your goals and adjusting your actions is always helpful.  Growth and change are hard and they need to be monitored.  So with that in mind, I’m going to try and make less people cry this quarter.  Baby steps.
